Sea Bears' Posthumus Honoured with Queen's Jubilee Medal

May 26, 2023

WINNIPEG – The Province of Manitoba presented Winnipeg Sea Bears centre and local star Chad Posthumus with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal on Friday. The Honourable Jeff Wharton, MLA for Red River, hosted Posthumus at his constituency office in Selkirk, MB to present the award.

The medal was established in 2022 to commemorate the 70th anniversary year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne, which began on Feb. 6, 2022.

“For 70 years The Queen has exemplified the true meaning of public service. The Platinum Jubilee is a welcome occasion to highlight those, who like Her Majesty, have dedicated themselves to the service of family, community and country. Therefore, as a province we are taking this opportunity to recognize the outstanding service of Manitobans who have done much to build and enhance our province,” said former Manitoba Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon on the award.

Posthumus was recognized for his contributions to his community through basketball. Off the court, he serves as an advocate for incorporating sport and activity in the lifestyle of those living with type one diabetes, a condition with which he was diagnosed at age seven. The seven-year professional veteran is returning to play in his hometown for the first time since his record-setting high school career at River East Collegiate.

“It’s certainly an honour to be able to present the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal to Chad today,” said Wharton. “It’s really a recognition of his commitment to the city of Winnipeg, this province and the community he lives in.”

“It’s a tremendous honour,” said Posthumus after receiving his medal. “You never expect that you could be recognized and honoured for things like this – it means a lot for myself, my community and everyone here in East Saint Paul where I’m from.”

Posthumus will take the court to tip off the Sea Bears’ inaugural season May 27 at Canada Life Centre in a matchup against the visiting Vancouver Bandits. For tickets, visit seabears.ca/tickets.
