Sea Bears Head to Calgary for a Rematch with the Surge
Riding high after clinching a playoff spot in Saskatoon, Winnipeg heads to Calgary for an 8:30 p.m. CT tip-off against the Surge, the only team to beat them at home this season.
There's extra motivation heading into Friday night. The last time these two teams met, the Calgary Surge stormed back with a 36-16 third quarter to hand Winnipeg its first and only home loss, 85-80. Former Sea Bear Armani Chaney hit the go-ahead bucket to seal it. The Sea Bears haven't forgotten. Winnipeg heads into this one carrying the energy of Wednesday's playoff-clinching performance in Saskatoon, a dominant 96-83 win where the team outscored the Mamba in three of four quarters and got contributions up and down the roster.
The storylines are stacked. D.J. Burns showed what he's capable of Wednesday night with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting in just over 12 minutes off the bench, and this is a group that is finding its footing with new additions in the mix. Jelani Watson-Gayle made his 2026 debut Wednesday and was immediately effective with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, giving head coach Mike Raimbault another option to throw at a Surge team that has proven it can make adjustments. Teddy Allen continues to be the anchor, coming off a double-double and the Target Score winning bucket in Saskatoon.
Winnipeg holds a 2-1 edge over Calgary this season, but the Surge showed on July 12 that they're capable of flipping the script. The Sea Bears have proven they can win away from Canada Life Centre, and Friday is another chance to prove it.
