Calgary Storms Back in the Third to Hand Winnipeg Its First Home Loss, 85-80

July 12, 2026

The Sea Bears held a 12-point halftime lead and fought hard until the final buzzer, but a 36-16 third quarter by the Surge flipped the script. Armani Chaney, a former Sea Bear this season, hit the game-winning shot to put it out of reach. Winnipeg remains first in the West and is back at it Wednesday.

Sunday afternoon at Canada Life Centre had all the ingredients for a statement win. The Sea Bears were at home, in front of their crowd, with a chance to clinch a playoff spot and push their perfect home record to 8-0. Winnipeg came out sharp, built a cushion, and looked like the better team through the first half, taking a 47-35 lead into the locker room.

A determined Calgary Surge squad had other ideas. The Surge outscored Winnipeg 36-16 in the third quarter to erase the deficit entirely and hold on for an 85-80 win. When the Sea Bears needed one more stop in the final moments, it was Armani Chaney, who spent the early part of this season in teal before signing with Calgary in June who hit the go-ahead bucket to seal it.

Teddy Allen led Winnipeg with 28 points, and Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Trey McGowens added 12 points and 3 assists, pushing his season assist total to 90 and breaking the franchise record for most assists in a single regular season.

"Obviously any loss hurts," Emmanuel Akot said. "We're just going to use this as a learning experience. We play them again next week, so we'll have another shot. We'll go back to the drawing board and improve."

Head Coach Mike Raimbault was measured in his assessment. "When you lose a close game, there's a lot of things that impact the outcome. We had a poor third quarter, a lot of possessions we'll look at and say we'd like to make better choices. We're not over-evaluating a win or a loss. We're going to prep for our road trip and go play the next game."

Winnipeg is 11-6 on the season and remains first in the Western Conference.
